Huntington, W. Va, March 4 (AP)-- In a precedent setting move, the West Virginia Wesleyan college board of trustees last night voted to admit negroes as regular candidates for degrees.
Previously negroes had been permitted to enroll at the Methodist school in Buckhannon only for special and extension courses.
The board's action came at its mid-year meeting, held here.
It means that Wesleyan would be the third institution of higher learning in the state at which a negro may take the full curricula. The only schools in the category at present are West Virginia State college at Institute and Bluefield State, all negro institutions.
A spokesman for the church said the Wesleyan board voted to liberalize its admission regulations in line with a policy established recently in other so-called border states.
