This

Virginia
Mine
Wars
of the
Early
20th
Century
. The
letter
is
a
petition
of
imprisoned
mine
workers
in
Mingo
County
,
W.V
. To the
Supreme
Court
of
Appeals
on
August
10
,
1921
. The
workers
claim
that they have been
seized
and
imprisoned
without
due
cause
, and have not been
charged
with
breaking
any
laws
so
are
being
held
unlawfully
. The
miners
further
claim
corruption
of the
due
process
of
law
in
Mingo
County
, and that the
“lawless
characters
and
gunmen”
employed
by the
Baldwin-Felts
agency
as
mine
guards
killed
Sid
Hatfield
and
Ed
Chambers
on
purpose
on
August
1
,
1921
. The
miners
entreat
the
Court
for a
writ
of
habeas
corpus
, that they be
charged
or
released
from
custody
.
