Ijumphries taught a, s u b s c r i p t i o n school on the lliddle Fork i n 1863, one of iht. very l a s t of i t s kind i r l the c ~ u n t y , The schoolhou3e stood at the l i n e between the Jacob Shaver and the Leonard Hyer lands, Here i n September, 1866, m a s taught by J. Humphries the f i r s t f r e e school i n Brctxton County, The t r u s t e e s of the school were Jacob V e s t f a l l , Jacob Shaver, and Jacob R i f f l e , living, on the heads of t h e t h r e e forks of Cedar Creel :. The scl- iool ,. house was a preaching place and f o r many years on Sugday afternr~ ons there w a s preaching and the young people cnme f o r miles. Singing schools were taught by M r. Stannard and JJr. H. X. Engle. The singing mas led by Luther Hefner, J. M. Cutlip, and others. There was a l s o another log schoolhouse as early as 1850 near Bonny on the Car~ pbellP lace. Another a c t i v i t y of community i n t e r e s t housed i n the old 1 ~ g sch9r~ lhouse at the ' I'hrke Forks was a d e b a t i x society. Tkbe high waters frequently mashed out the roads. Later lumbering cut them i n t o r u t s , This continued f o r many years, I n a d d i t i o n there have been i r r e g u l a r springs and landslides. Only i n very recent years has there been a r e a l program of road building to connect the community with other p a r t s of the county by good automobile roads, About the year 1880 a mail route was established betveen Sutton and Stouts M i l l , with p o s t o f f i c e s at Lloydsville and Cutlips. JuliaQoyd, now Mrs,, H, E, Engle, mas postmistress at Lloydsville 2nd has held t h i s o f f i c e most of the time since, The first post-master at Cutlips mas 14. Cutlip soon succeecied him, I n t h i s ~ f f i c e $- here were frequent charges u n t i l it was f i n a l l y established at t h e s t o r e of E. W, Cutlip about 1890. The post o f f i c e at E x c h h ~ e rnras established August 5, 1904, with Mrs. Samantha Uuffield as post-mistress. The f i r s t q u a r t e r l s cancellat i o o~ f s tarnps m a s $ 10.29, Lester Gervrig, the present postmaster, succeeded t o the o f f i c e i n December, 1.904, The c a n c e l l a t i o n of star- ips i n 1921 was about $ 150.
